Thank you to everyone who came out for our annual Farm Party. We had a great time! Maxwell the donkey enjoyed lots of carrots and attention. We made the most of not being able to have a campfire (we are under a burn ban) with a lovely faux fire centerpiece and s’mores crescent rolls on the grill. Cooper ended up filthy dirty so I think the kids had fun running around and playing. We saw some old friends and made some new ones. We are so grateful for our wonderful community of people who support us.
The team started digging the carrots this week! There are plenty more on the way. This week we also picked the first of the beets, which the deer have thankfully been leaving alone this year. Beets are their favorite. They’ll leave the entire field untouched except for the beets. The broccoli is producing well. The cauliflower plants look amazing but no sign of heads yet. Surely they will be ready before CSA season is over. We took down the last trellis of tomatoes and pulled all the pepper plants out of the high tunnel to make space for garlic. There should be more lettuce mix ready for next week as well.
Sunday brings a possibility of rain. It would be incredibly helpful. The past four months have been unusually dry. That’s a long time to be behind on rainfall. It impacts us, but it’s a greater problem for livestock farmers, who rely on rain to make the grass grow! The dry weather means spending a lot more money on hay and feed for their animals. Let’s hope for a wet November so we can do some catching up.
