Happily, things have calmed down a bit from last week’s wild ride. No more fallen trees and goat escapes. There’s been a bit more rain but not five inches in a day. No more near-record lows.
The up and down roller-coaster ride of spring weather has caused the napa cabbage to start bolting. Stressful weather makes plants panic and start sending up flower stalks before they should. Luckily, like other plants in the brassica family, all parts of the napa cabbage plant are edible. And quite delicious, so even if they have started growing a stalk you can eat that part, too. We are hoping to squeeze enough plants out of our first planting of napa cabbage to give it to all our CSA members this week.
On Tuesday night last week we got down 31 degrees – not just a frost but a freeze! Luckily, we knew it was coming and were (mostly) prepared. The hardest hit were the potatoes. I only managed to get about half of them covered. The ones that were protected are green and bushy, the ones that were not are brown and shriveled. Still, I am confident that they will recover. But I am amazed a single layer of flimsy row cover made such a dramatic difference. Everything in the greenhouse made it through unscathed, which is a big relief.
TCF Recipe Collection
Need some ideas for preparing the veggies in your share? Visit the recipe collection on our website! Last night we ate Savory Vegan Mustard Greens with our dinner. Admittedly, it doesn’t have a huge number of recipes yet. Apparently I haven’t written any recipes for kohlrabi or napa cabbage. Try this Sweet and Tangy Cabbage Salad from My Korean Kitchen.
If you have a recipe that you would like to contribute to the collection for the benefit of all CSA members and customer present and future, shoot Randy an email at randy@tubbycreekfarm.com.
Still Safer at Home
Despite the fact that Tennessee’s “Stay at Home” order is set to expire at the end of the month, we plan to continue staying at home. Specifically, we have decided to not attend the Cooper Young Community Farmers Market for the immediate future because we still feel uncomfortable asking our employees to put themselves out in public and increase their chances of contracting and/or spreading COVID-19. We will also continue with home delivery of the CSAs at least through the end of May. We will happily work out arrangements as things change.
We will continue with our online orders and home delivery. We know we haven’t had a whole lot of variety in our online store yet, but as the season gets rolling we will have more and more great produce to offer.
