Pre-orders open for Native Plant Sale
Tubby Creek Farm’s annual Native Plant Sale will be on May the 9th at the Cooper Young Community Farmers Market. This year we have 51 species of native plants to add beauty and functionality to your landscape. Native species support pollinators, beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife. They are low maintenance once established because they are naturally adapted to our conditions. Visit the online store to browse our selection of native plants, or to place an order to pick up on May 9th at the Cooper Young Market or on the farm by appointment.
Rain, Rain, Come this way
We keep waiting for the rain, and it keeps passing us by. We have had the driest March and April we have ever experienced in our 15 years of farming. Spring is reliably wet. Usually too wet as we struggle to get things done in rainy weather and muddy conditions. We never set up the spring garden for irrigation because we’ve never needed to use it. There is plenty of rain to keep the garden watered. Setting up irrigation in the spring garden is a waste of time, money and resources. This year has been different. Remarkably different. And while the drier weather has made it easier for us to prepare beds for planting, for example, it is making me uneasy. Hopefully this week will bring a change in the weather pattern and we will get the rain we desperately need.
Why do we sent out the newsletter on Tuesday?
We send out the newsletter on Tuesday after we have harvested and packed the shares. Usually I have an idea of what’s going in the shares a week ahead of time, but I don’t make a hard and fast plan until Monday, when we start picking the sturdier vegetables. Sometimes things surprise me, and are ready sooner than I expected. And sometimes a crop that I was counting on turns out not to be ready. We don’t always know if we will have enough of a certain crop for everyone until after it has been harvested. The further in advance we predict what will be in the shares, the more inaccuracies we have in the list.
