Welcome to the Fall CSA. Right now the shares still look very summery, with lots of produce that will be familiar if you had a summer share. But every day we are getting more fall crops planted. So far we have planted Napa cabbage, green, red, and savoy cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower (including a new purple one this year), kohlrabi, collard, kale, carrots, beets, head lettuce and leaf lettuce, radishes, daikon, arugula, komatsuna, turnips, Brussels sprouts, fennel ….and probably a couple other things I have forgotten about. Chard and rutabagas are waiting in the greenhouse and will get transplanted soon. There is so much good food to look forward to! We will also have pole beans and, very soon, sweet potatoes. We plan on starting the big sweet potato dig on Friday or Monday. There’s plenty of butternut squash still in storage, too.
All the transplants are doing quite well, but we’ve had a devil of a time getting direct seeded crops to germinate. And the weeds! We’ve never seen more weeds in the fall garden. I will, as usual, blame the weather. It’s a good thing we are finally fully staffed with a really excellent team. I look forward to introducing them to you in the newsletter in the coming weeks.
It’s already been an eventful September with Randy spending a week in the hospital with an infection. He’s been home since Sunday and we are all so happy he is back, and not just because the grass was starting to get a little out of control and in need of some bush hogging. Again, so grateful for our team, and also our moms, for helping keep things rolling along smoothly.
