Pumpkin Patch Dreams

Pumpkin Patch Dreams

Have you ever decided to do something just for fun, to treat yourself, and it ends up going a bit sideways?  This year I thought wouldn’t it be so fun to have pumpkin patch!  Our local friends and members could bring their kids or grands and get some pumpkins.  And we could have it for the fall party.  I bought a bunch of pumpkin seeds, and asked a farmer friend who has pumpkin experience when to plant.

Everything was going swimmingly.  Until it’s August and the pumpkins are already orange!  But you can just leave pumpkins in the field, right?  That’s how they do it at the pumpkin patch.  Well my poor pumpkins started to rot!  Too hot!  This was supposed to be FUN and now I’ve got a field full of rotting pumpkins and no happy October children running around and taking pumpkins home.

In the end, about half the pumpkins were still able to be picked.  I had someone else pick them, though, I was too sore about it to face the rotten pumpkins.  As soon as they were picked Randy mowed the patch down.  The crows have been feasting on what is left in the field.  I am not giving up on my pumpkin patch dream.  The beautiful thing about vegetable farming is that we always get to try again next year.

Fall Party

Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 22nd for our annual Fall Open House/Cookout/Party from 5pm to 8pm.   We will provide meat and vegan entrees, and ask that guests bring a side dish or dessert to share.   We’ll be giving tours of the farm and gathering around a campfire with all the fixings for s’mores.  It’s a fun time for kids of all ages.  Bring your own beverages, but please leaves pets at home.   Straw bale seating so bring a camp chair if you’d like.  All CSA members, market customers, friends, and neighbors are invited.  Free event.
