Welcome to the 2024 Fall CSA!

Welcome to the 2024 Fall CSA!

Welcome to the 2024 Fall CSA!  We are looking forward to the season that offers the greatest diversity of produce.  Right now warm season vegetables like tomatoes, okra, eggplant and squash are still abundant.  But growth is well underway in the fall garden and soon we will have more leafy greens and root vegetables.

We take a two week break in the CSA between the end of the summer season and the beginning of fall.  The question I am often asked is do we farmers actually get to take a break during our CSA break?  Well, I got to take a five day trip to Maine.  I grew up in Maine, and when my mom isn’t here in Mississippi she is at her house near Sebago Lake in Standish, Maine.  Earlier this summer, Connie and Cooper went for a visit and seeing them visit all my favorite places really convinced me to plan a trip of my own.  It had been about 15 years since the last time I was in Maine!  Entirely too long to stay away from such a beautiful place.  But I was only able to go because Randy and the rest of our hard working team handled things on the farm in my absence.

Late August is actually a very busy time on the farm, even without CSA shares to pack and distribute each week.  We have been busy seeding carrots and radishes and more in the field, and planting out Brussels sprouts and broccoli, etc.  We’ve been cleaning summer crops out of high tunnels to make way for chard and fennel and celery.  And weeding and watering and tending all the new baby plants all over the farm that will feed us through the coming months.

Eventually things will start to slow down and we can coast through fall and into winter.  But it is still crunch time for another month or so.  There is a much to do and it’s all very time sensitive.  Happily, the weather seems to be turning a little more fall-like, which makes it much more pleasant.  We have also gotten some much needed rain, leaving us farmers with nothing to complain about for a change.
