Our online store is now open to order your South Eastern US native plants! Plant orders will be available for pick-up at the Cooper Young Community Farmers Market on May 11th, or here on the farm by appointment. You can also come shop in person on May 11th, we will have separate booth at the market specifically dedicated to native plant sales.
Most of our native plant selection is sold either in 4-packs or 4-inch round peat pots. 4-packs are $12 each and peat pots are $7 each. Everything in the online store has been grown from seed in our greenhouse. We started these seeds in January, many of them we started to cold stratify back in November. Growing native plants is a patient process!
Why should you add native plants to your landscape?
There is no better way to support native pollinators like bees, butterflies and moths. Many native plants attract seed eating birds or hummingbirds. Some are food plants for specific species of caterpillars. And native plants are low maintenance once established. Because they are adapted to grow in our regional climate and soil conditions they will flourish with minimal care. These are primarily perennial plants that will come back year after year and many will spread of can be divided to provide an ever growing abundance of blooms. The few annuals we have will reseed themselves and come back year after year as well.
We are vegetable farmers, why are we growing native plants?
You probably don’t know that way back before Tubby Creek Farm, and before I worked for GrowMemphis, I worked at Lichterman Nature Center specializing in native plant propagation. It was one of my first jobs after I moved to Memphis is 2007. Growing native plants is a joyful endeavor for me. A few years ago we got a new greenhouse, larger and more professional than what we were growing in before. And in recent years one of our local native plant sales in Holly Springs has not been operating. It is wonderful that there seems to be an ever growing interest in native plants in home landscapes, but native plants can still be hard to find. What better way to use our extra greenhouse space than growing natives? This is just the beginning. We hope to continue to expand the diversity of the native plants we offer in coming years.
