We made it! August is over. Our Fall season is beginning, even though fall is still officially three weeks away. We made it through Ida’s rain and wind, grateful that the brunt of the storm skirted us. The timing wasn’t great – we thought we would have Monday morning to harvest but the rain started early and we lost a lot of tomatoes because of it. Oh well, that’s just the way it goes sometimes.
The fall garden is a work in progress. The army worms mowed down the first planting of beets. I have reseeded them. The carrots flat out refuse to germinate despite the fact that Melea and I have collectively seeded 7,560 feet of them. I have ordered more seeds. But the first of the salad greens should be ready next week. I am anxious to see what the sweet potatoes have been up to underground all this time. If what is going on above ground in any indication we are in for a fantastic harvest. The broccoli and cauliflower are all transplanted out into the field, and half the cabbage and kohlrabi. Last week I seeded daikon and watermelon radish and the first of the hakurei turnips.
Save the date for our Fall Harvest Party! Sunday October 24th from 5pm to 8pm. We skipped this annual tradition last year, but are optimistic for this year! This outdoor event will feature a cookout and potluck, and a tour of the farm, and a small bonfire. It is a chance for us to celebrate as another growing season nears its end. The event is free and all our CSA members (past and present), farmers market customers, and friends are invited. I hope you will consider joining us in celebration.
