Spring is Here!

Spring is Here!

CSA starts April 15th and 18th!  If you are signed up for CSA you’ll be getting an email with more information soon.

It’s been a restful winter but a busy month or so getting the growing season underway.  The greenhouse is jam packed with plants for our gardens, for vegetable and herb plant sale, and our native plant sale.   We’ve nearly finished planting cool season crops in the field and our high tunnel tomatoes are growing well.  Soon we will be planting beans, cucumbers, and squash.    I’ve enjoyed my lazy winter days with time to paint and hang out with the horses, but I have to admit that it also feels good to be busy again.

It’s been an eventful winter.  The winter storm that dropped snow on Memphis brought us inches of ice instead.  We feel very fortunate to have only lost one tunnel, and that our power was only out for a few days.  More recently, the cold snap in March – after unseasonably warm weather – knocked back our spring crops, killed the beets and carrots, and may have taken out this year’s blueberry crop.  We’ve reseeded and things are regrowing, but it did set things back a little.  There is no way to go but forward!

We are trying a few new things this year, and re-trying a few old ones.  We will be growing a test bed of ginger and turmeric.  So hot right now!  Strawberries are back, but we are only growing them in the tunnel.  They have probationary status.   It’s been many years since we have grown garlic, and happily it survived the high tunnel collapsing on it!  After a critical look at our tomato growing plan, we’ve made major changes for this year.   Hopefully everything will work out brilliantly.
