Smashing Pumpkins

Smashing Pumpkins

We had a great time at the farm party, thank you to everyone who came and celebrated with us.  My favorite part was watching all the children run around.  A bunch of kids got to smash pumpkins for the chickens.  Better than a pumpkin patch any day!  Showing the farm to people really helps me remember what a special thing we have here.

As we head into the final weeks of the CSA we are busy getting the farm ready for winter.  We’ve planted our fall cover crop because we thought it was going to rain.  But alas, another dry week.  The seeds will be ready and waiting when rain finally does come.  Today, I spread a mix of native grass and wildflowers for our permanent pollinator and beneficial insect habitat.   Many native plant seeds have a naturally dormancy.  The cold, wet weather of winter breaks that dormancy so they can sprout in the spring.  It will take a couple years for us to see the results of this project as native perennials typically grow slowly in the first year.

If you would like to see some pictures from the party you can find them towards the bottom of our 2023 Farm pictures collection.
