We have a lot to look forward to as we enter our second decade as farmers. That’s right, this will be the 11th year of Tubby Creek Farm. I’ve been thinking about the person I was when Randy and I started the farm in 2011. She was so excited. She had so much energy! And she was dauntless. We had very little money, no infrastructure, and not all that much farming experience. What we had was a vision and the belief that we could make it a reality. We had some real mountains to climb. Man, did that woman have grit!
It is easy for me to get discouraged by the problems we still haven’t solved, the setbacks we encounter, and inevitable new challenges that continue to crop up. But what would that past version of me think if she were to see the farm today? She would be proud to see what she helped build over the last 10 years. She’d be telling me I didn’t know how good I’ve got it!
I have been trying to embrace her spirit as we prepare for the next farming season. We have grown in so many ways. Our family has grown. Our community of friends and neighbors, patrons, CSA members and peer farmers has grown. Our operation has grown – we have a new greenhouse, a huge washing and packing building, four high tunnels and now 2 tractors. We’ve built better soil to support healthier plants. And we sure know a heck of a lot more about what we are doing, even if we don’t have everything figured out. I might not have as much energy as I had ten years ago, but I can be just as excited.
