I have been hearing the barred owl again in the early mornings. Our dogs have been hearing a lot more sounds in the crisp, cool air as well, and have had busy nights of barking and chasing. Even though the mid days have been hot, this is a wonderful time of the year to be outdoors. October might just be my favorite farming month. The weather is generally pleasant. Planting for the year is nearly finished. In a couple of weeks, fall carrots will be ready. And we have our fall party!
Fall Harvest Party, Open House and Cookout!
Join us Sunday, October 22nd from 4pm to 7pm. We will be grilling hotdogs, hamburgers and vegan black bean burgers, please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Bring your own beverages (we will have mulled cider and hot chocolate). Farm tours. Campfire with s’mores. Straw bale seating, bring a camp chair if you’d like. No pets, please. Overnight campers welcome (let us know in advance, please). This is a free event. Friends, neighbors, farmers market patrons, CSA members are all invited.
Time to plant strawberries
Our strawberry plants are due to arrive tomorrow. Today and yesterday we’ve been preparing bed space for them by rolling out landscape fabric, burning holes, laying drip tape, and carrying lots of sandbags to hold it all down. Half of the strawberry plants will be going in the high tunnel, and half out in the field. I am hoping the high tunnel strawberries, because they are protected from the rain, will have fewer disease problems and yield more berries.
