First Four Acres Turned

First Four Acres Turned

It has been brutal hot but this weekend it was cooler. Still 94 degrees, but it felt cooler compared to the 101 degrees earlier in the week.  I had Monday off from my office job so we treated ourselves slept in Sunday and worked on the farm Monday.  I feel like we can really start calling it a farm, the first four acres was disked in earlier in the week.

So when we arrived at 5 AM we parked with our headlights over the fresh earth.  Wasn’t much to do with it yet but there it was.  When the sun came up Jo and I started in, me clearing fence line, Jo pulling up t-posts along the road.

Next to where we plan to build the shed, wash station and cool room were a set of old Sweet Gum trees that are died or dying so we hired Brett with Treeman Services from Tupelo  to cut them down.  It is already looking better and I can’t wait for him to finish, it should really improve the looks and safety of that section of the property.

Our friend Adrian installed the breaker box for the well and built and installed the mailbox post. Next trip we mount the box. I know it’s silly but I can’t wait to mail a letter from our farm.  So, lots of work going on and it is looking more and more like a farm.

As soon as the well is in we are planting a Sorghum Sudan grass and cowpeas cover crops the Sudan grass to break up and add organic matter to the soil and the cowpeas to fix nitrogen.   I can’t wait to have something growing on the field.  Speaking of growing, this week we start seeds for our leeks.  Yes, we are starting our planting now for our springs crops. Like I said, the work has already begun.

Till next time, Dehna hunu
