Final Summer CSA

Final Summer CSA

This is the last week of our summer share!  Thank you everyone for making us your farmers for this season.  Honestly, at the end of July I was worried we wouldn’t have enough produce to put in the shares these last two weeks of the summer share but we made it!  It was close.  Summer had lots of successes and lots of wonderful abundance, but it had some challenges, too.  I am feeling

relieved to have reached this moment in the season.

Everyone has been asking me if I am actually getting a break during the two weeks between the end of the summer share and the beginning of the fall share.  Yes, in fact!  Cooper and I are going to Wilmington North Carolina to visit my dad for five days.  Randy and our fantastic employees will be here working because there is much to do to get ready for the fall season.   I am so grateful

for everyone who works on the farm and makes it possible for me to get away during the growing season.  What a luxury!

Despite being planted late, the watermelons grew well this summer.  Healthy vines, lots of fruit.  Unfortunately, we had a bit of a problem with the crows.  For the past few years, ever since we figured out that crows were the culprits, we’ve been stringing up reflective things to deter them.  CD’s, cardboard covered in

aluminum foil, and as of last year, reflective “bird scare” ribbon.  It has all worked very well until this year.  Crows are exceptionally intelligent.  Clearly they’ve caught on and are willing to risk it for the delicious watermelon.  They pecked holes in at least a third of them.  We will have to level up our strategy for next year.  I think making actual scarecrows would be kind of fun.

The arugula and radishes that Kayla and Katherine planted on Friday have already germinated.  We have transplanted more squash for September, and we also transplanted the broccoli and cauliflower which wont be ready until later in the fall.  Today Raquel and Shelby seeded four beds of carrots and two beds of beets.  In the next two weeks we will be seeding and transplanting nearly every day to prepare for a bountiful fall.
