We’ve been enjoying some company lately. My mother, Guin, has been here for her semi annual visit. Randy’s mother, Connie, was able to visit for a week. And my dad, Sterling, made it out for a few days for our Fall Party. Cooper has been enjoying all the attention from his grandparents. We wish everyone could stay longer, but it’s time to say goodbye.
We are three quarters of the way through digging the sweet potato crop. They really sized up in the hot weather we had in September and early October. It is an abundant harvest! The ones that have been dug are curing in the bunkhouse with the space heater cranked up. If we get them harvested and cured well, they will last for a year. I know this for a fact because a few weeks ago I found a hidden box of sweet potatoes from last year. They were still in perfect condition after sitting in storage since last October.
With the cooler weather, everything is growing more slowly. It is a welcome change, in my opinion. While the sensitive summer crops of
eggplant, tomatoes and peppers are still alive, they have slowed to a standstill. This week will probably be the last of the tomatoes. The wet season has begun. The soil is wet, and will likely stay that way for the next five months. Time to dig some trenches to drain any standing water out of the vegetable beds. I wouldn’t mind a good freeze to kill the pigweed and get rid of some insect pests.
Even though we are still clearing out the field, harvesting produce, packing shares and going to market, we are also starting to work on some big projects that get pushed to the side during the growing season. This year we’ve got a really big project. We are having a new washing and packing facility built. Randy has been clearing the site so that work can begin. We’ll be telling you lots more about it soon as we are extremely excited.
