We are celebrating this fall-like weather with our first greens harvest today! CSA members will be getting arugula and an Asian Greens mix with Tokyo Bekana, mizuna, and mustards. The nights have been cool and the skies have been clear. The humidity has broken. How glorious that we get to work outdoors! After sweating through summer, this is a magnificent reward.
Kale and lettuce mix are next up, only a couple of weeks away. We checked on the sweet potatoes, and I would like to give them a little more time in the ground. I’m not surprised they are behind schedule with the cool-ish July we enjoyed this year.
Planting continues even as we are harvesting the first fall crops. We will keep seeding radishes and arugula, turnips and lettuce. I can’t seem to germinate carrots to save my life. I even had to order more seed to plant them a fourth time. Please send happy, germinating thoughts to the carrots. In my experience, September is a little too late to be seeding them but I had no choice.
The tomato harvest is almost completely done. Usually we are picking tomatoes all the way into October. Maybe I made a mistake with the planting dates. Maybe they just came in early. I am not sure. I could have planted another whole succession of tomatoes. Could have done with another planting of squash, too, but that is also finished for the year. Oh, well, nothing can be done about that now. It is certainly too late to start more. You would think that after 10 years I’d have all these details ironed out. But every year is different, and it just feels like the timing of everything has been wacky this year.
Now that the ground is drying out its time for one more hustle. We need to make beds for next spring before wet fall weather arrives. This means I need to know how many spring beds we need, which means I need to know what we are planting in February, March and early April next year. Or at least have an approximation. Randy lost a day or two of tractor work with a tire puncture, but thanks to the local tire shop and a nice forecast we should be making those beds soon.
