The days are short and the nights are long, and there has been plenty of that cold damp winter weather that defines this time of year in the south. It seems nearly impossible to recall the long, hot, sweaty days of July. I am enjoying a break from the hectic pace of summer. Last week I attended a Zoom workshop with eight other experienced farmers from all over the country, facilitated by the brilliant farm consultant Ellen Polishuk. We talked about managing employees, order and delivery logistics, and tracking yield, among many other topics. There is a lot to operating a successful farm besides just growing produce! The workshop has given me lots of new ideas, but more importantly it has added to my excitement about the coming year.
It may not be glamorous, but back office work is what keeps this farm going. Randy has been putting in the hours in the office to update our online farm store, track CSA sales, and finish the books from 2020. On my to-do list is starting seeds in the greenhouse. It is time to start cabbage, kohlrabi, kale, collards and lettuce that will be ready for our earliest spring shares!
