A lot happened on the farm this week. But none of that is important in comparison to what happened and is happening all over our country. Black lives matter.
As a business owner, I recognize that when I speak I’m not just representing myself but my business. I know that our customers have diverse backgrounds and may have very different opinions than my own. As a result, I am far less vocal about my personal views than I might be otherwise. But this is not the time for silence. Black lives matter.
This newsletter is a window into our lives as farmers in an honest way. It is also a platform to communicate our values as they relate to our farming methods. But we aren’t just farming robots. We are humans in the world. And this week the murder of George Floyd and the response of people all over the country and even the world has been on my mind constantly. Black lives matter.
Randy and I recommit ourselves to the fight not only against overt racism, but the covert racism that pervades our society and institutions. That starts every day by looking in the mirror and trying to educate and better ourselves, listening to Black voices, and setting aside our white fragility. We acknowledge our white privilege and pledge to use that privilege where we can to fight racism. We stand in solidarity with everyone engaged in the struggle to end police brutality against Black people and bring about a more just society. Black lives matter.
This may not be what you expected in your inbox. You may think it is inappropriate for us to use this platform for a “political” issue. It is not political. It is a violation of our humanity. And it is our obligation as humans to use whatever platform we have to speak out against the incredible injustices carried out against Black people. There can be no neutrality in a racist society. As white people, as individuals, and as business owners, we cannot afford to be silent.
