We Have Power

The big news this week is that we are in our new washing and packing building!  The power finally got hooked up so we could get the walk-in turned on.  It has been a huge relief, even if there have been a few growing pains.  Turns out the adhesive we were using to affix the wall panels in the walk-in is garbage.  As soon as we started using the new walk-in the paneling on the ceiling started falling down.  Whoops.  The good news is that we now have multiple walk-in cool rooms, so once we get another finished – with a better adhesive – we can fix the one we are using now.  If that wasn’t enough, on Wednesday evening we had some wild thunderstorms.  We had a strong electrical surge that blew out the power cords to both our Cool-Bot thermostats in the walk-in (among other things).  Luckily the units themselves weren’t damaged and we got new power cords in on Friday evening.

Even with a hiccup or two, it is already a gigantic relief to be in the new space.  There is just so much more space to work.  Even with part of the room taken up by the ongoing walk-in construction, we have a lot more elbow room.  The walk-in is bigger, too.  No more shuffling things in and out to make space.  And it is only going to get better as it gets completed and we continue to fine tune our setup.

Out in the field the summer cover crop of cowpeas and sunflowers is growing.  Anna and Nicole planted our nearly 1000 sweet potato slips, and everyone chipped in to mulch the beds with wheat straw.  The sweet potatoes should be a low/no maintenance crop.  Last year we got away with just a few hours of weeding early in the season.  We plant them now at the beginning of June, water them as needed, and come back in September and dig them up.    If we are lucky, we’ll get close to two tons of sweet potatoes.  But only if we have a good, hot summer.
