Greenhouse seeding is underway for the 2020 CSA season.  Cabbages (green, red, savoy and Napa) and kohlrabi are already poking their heads out of the soil mix and lettuce and bok choy are sure to follow soon.  It’s a good thing, too, because all this wet winter weather can really get a farmer down.  Nothing a little new life can’t cure.

There is so much to look forward to in 2020!  Slowly but surely, the new washing and packing facility is going up.  Having adequate storage and space to work is going to help us get to the next level.  That might be the biggest change for 2020, but it isn’t the only change.  Every year we revisit the crop plan and make changes.  We can always do better.  Here is a sampling of just a few of the many changes we have made for this year:

  • Encouraged by our success with savoy cabbage last year, we’ve added a red cabbage to the line up!
  • 2019 was a disastrous year for our cantaloupe crop, with most of the melons splitting in the field.  This year we are testing out five new varieties, including some bred for shipping that should have a stronger rind.  We will be looking for a melon that can handle wet summer weather but also meets our standards for flavor.  Maybe there is a taste test in your future.
  • Isn’t it ridiculous that we don’t grow radicchio?  This green has a reputation for being challenging, but we Alexanders love a challenge!
  • We are growing up!  Literally.  Cucumbers and winter squash will be grown on trellises this year.  We hope this will make for cleaner fruit, better pest control, and easier harvesting.

Every new year always sounds perfect on paper.  I am sure we will have our share of curve balls and crises.  But isn’t it wonderful that we get to try it again every year?  With so many different crops to master, we get to spend a lifetime honing our craft and still have more to learn.
