It has been a damp week. Which is mostly good because we are behind on rainfall this spring. I know, it seems impossible after all that flooding. But we did not get as much rain as Memphis did, and we have not had regular rain. I know we are behind on rainfall because the silt pond has dried up. It usually doesn’t dry up until June. I went to check on the salamanders and found there were many that were not ready for terrestrial life. We we brought buckets and picked up as many as we could and carried them to the spring fed pond up in the woods. I think we moved a few hundred, but there were a lot that we were already too late to save. By the next evening, the vultures had taken care of anything left behind.
Native Plant Sale SUNDAY here at Tubby Creek Farm
Thanks to everyone who came out and supported our native plant sale at the Cooper Young Farmers Market on Saturday. If you missed it, we are having another sale here at Tubby Creek Farm in Ashland, MS this SUNDAY the 18th from 11 am to 5 pm. I have about 45 species of native plants and lots of “buy one get one” deals.
What’s coming up in the CSA?
I pulled up the first taste-tester carrot for Randy yesterday. The Yaya carrots (a new variety for us) should be ready the first week of June. Before that I expect to have fennel, red onions, leeks, and napa cabbage for the boxes. Of course there will be more beets, radishes, lettuce, greens and cabbage. We often have the very first squash fot the last week of the spring share but it’s a little behind this year so unless it really jumps up, the squash will be coming in June. Early June will also bring potatoes and (fingers crossed) green beans. In addition to spring broccoli, we are also trialing three varieties of green beans this year. Last year’s attempt at green beans was not a fantastic success, so I’m giving it another try.
