I don’t think I would have believed that four people could install a 2000 square foot high tunnel in six hours if I weren’t witnessing it today.  The crew from Scenic Acres is putting up a new high tunnel.   This is one instance where it is definitely worth paying the professionals for their experience and expertise.

Nothing is in the plan for this high tunnel until the middle of August.  I have three and a half months to grow what ever I want in there!   I think I might grow cantaloupe.  It would be hard to justify growing cantaloupe in the tunnels generally because its such a space hog.  High tunnel space is prime real estate, otherwise reserved for crops with a high yield per square foot.   But rainy weather when cantaloupe is ripening can completely ruin a field-grown crop.  So it would be interesting to see how it does in the tunnel.

On Thursday of last week we turned up the hustle and got 17 beds shaped and covered in bio-plastic.  Yesterday I transplanted tomatoes in

to four of those beds.  The rest are for eggplant, squash, zucchini and okra.  As soon as we get a chance we will be making more beds!   It feels good to have the first field tomatoes planted.
