Hurry Up and Wait!

Hurry Up and Wait!

Cooper eating the first strawberries of the year

The potatoes are sprouting and the apple trees are blooming.  It must be April!   The apple trees are giving us a quite a show and I’m hoping we will get a substantial harvest this year.  That late cold snap looks like it nipped whatever pears we might have gotten this year.  But the apples!  The apples look great.  The 24 young apple trees we planted in the fall are breaking dormancy and looking strong, too.  It’ll be a few years, but I can’t wait to taste all the different varieties.  All of our trees are old fashioned southern apples from Century Farm Orchards in North Carolina.

It is another one of those “hurry up and wait” times of the year as we anxiously watch the weather, hoping the rain will give us a break.  Then the soil could dry and we would be able to prepare the ground and make garden beds.  I have “scheduled” the first tomato planting for April 15th and I can just hear Mother Nature laughing at my audacity.  Last year we had a wet spring and didn’t get them in until the beginning of May.  I have wisely adjusted the seed starting date for squash to accommodate the vagaries of April in Mississippi.

The greenhouse is brimming with plants for our plant sale.  I’ll be bringing more plants to market this weekend, including tomatoes, but I wont have the full line-up until the following week, April 15th.  Come see me at the farmers market for Certified Naturally Grown vegetable and herb plants for your garden this year.  Or head over to our online store.  There you can place an order to pick up on the 15th or the 22nd at the Cooper Young Community Farmers Market or here on the farm.  The store will close for pre-orders at midnight Tuesday April 11th.

The CSA will start the 19th and we are making final preparations like ordering boxes!  This year we are trying something new and going to reusable, corrugated plastic boxes.  We’ll give you more information on that soon.   We still have a few spaces left for Wednesday delivery or pick-up subscriptions.  If you are interested, please don’t delay or they might be gone.
